Ingredients

- 2 tbsp healthy oil
- 2 tsp sofrito
- 2 tsp sazón
- 1 c ham
- 1 tbsp Tomato sauce
- 1 bouillon cube
- 3 c Rice
- 2 c gandules
- 3 c water, if using bouillon cube or 3 cups of broth
- Salt, to taste, pink himalayan salt
- Black pepper, optional, to taste
- Oregano, optional, to taste

Directions

1. In a large pot, preferably a Dutch oven (typically known as a caldero), add the oil and stir fry the sofrito on high heat for a few seconds.
2. Add the sazón, diced ham, tomato sauce, and bouillon cube and a bit of water or a bit of broth. Continue to stir fry until it releases a delicious aroma.
3. Add the rice and gandules and stir. Then add the water or broth until the rice is completely covered (about 1/2 inch above the rice).
4. Add salt to taste (about 1/2 tsp). Also add black pepper and oregano if desired.
5. Taste the liquid to make sure the flavor is to your liking.
6. Allow to boil on high heat until almost all the liquid has disappeared. Mix well from the bottom up.
7. Cover and reduce heat to low. Allow to cook for 10-15 minutes or until the rice is completely cooked.
